résumé The experimental approach adopted by the Laboratoire de Mécanique de Lille to study braking friction materials is based on reduced-scale tests, able to reproduce their in-service loadings and especially their thermal one: experimental parameters choice is based on Newcomb`s model for contact temperature estimation. Within the framework of FAPA Predit research program, the study of the couple C48 steel/ FLERTEX organic matrix composite is described. The choice of the experimental conditions is justified, the obtained results are in good correlation with the theoretical estimations given by Newcomb`s model. The obtained tribological behaviour is in good agreement with the one usually observed for this type of materials at scale 1. The observations and analyses carried out on the composite material allow to determine the composition and to identify the formation mechanisms of the third body generated during braking: the formation of plane sheets is detailed, and the presence of iron oxides coming from the disc material is underlined.
